Exhibition Introduction
"Sound in the Rain • Landscape in Sound" is an artistic exploration centered on sound. Artist Hsiao Sheng-Chien has long focused on the interaction of sound with space, environment, and people, creating works that present embodied sensory experiences. This exhibition, through the concept of the soundscape, interweaves rain, environmental sounds, and human activity. Birdsong, frog calls, and insect chirps at the entrance form the overture, leading into the main exhibition space where flowing water, lightning, rain, and thunder intertwine to create a field both real and poetic.
Hsiao’s works often employ recordings, installations, and live sound as media, emphasizing listening as a mode of perception. Sound is not merely background; it shapes atmosphere, evokes emotion, and even alters how people understand their environment. Rain is both a rhythmic phenomenon of nature and a vessel of cultural memory. Visitors seem to step into a space constructed by sound, immersed in the rhythms of lightning, raindrops, and thunder, entering a sonic and luminous experience where sound becomes landscape.
"Sound is scenery." Unlike traditional visual art, Hsiao creates an intangible yet tangible field through sound. The audience is no longer just watching but invited to listen—to hear the layers of rain, the breath of the environment, and the interaction between self and space. This listening process is both a sensory awakening and a dialogue of the soul.
"Sound in the Rain • Landscape in Sound" is not only a metaphor for life but also a reminder to rediscover the presence of sound in everyday moments. From the rhythm of raindrops to the subtle details of environmental noise, everything can become artistic material. With a keen auditory aesthetic, Hsiao transforms sound into landscape, allowing each visitor to find their own feelings and memories within. It is an exploration of the relationship between sound, space, and people—an artistic journey where the audience slows down and immerses themselves in experiencing the world.
