Special Issue for "Neither Home nor Genre - Yu Ching" | Online Reading: Electronic Version | Download: Cross Page | Single Page

Yu Ching, from Hong Kong, is a professor in the Department of English at National Central University. She is a writer, independent film director, and cultural studies scholar. Over the years, she has written columns, published poetry, and cultural and artistic critiques in newspapers and magazines. She has created documentaries and video works, focusing on issues of sexuality and gender, media, and representation, and has recently researched Hong Kong's cultural history and colonial modernity.
Frequenting both Hong Kong and Taiwan, Yu Ching has resided in Taiwan for an extended period since 2021. The theme of this program, "Neither Home nor Genre," uses "neither" to question definitions, akin to genres, identities, gender, mainstream and marginal, having and lacking a home. "Neither Home" - having a home yet lacking one, constantly constructing a place of residence; "Neither Genre" - outlaws, non-tribal. In this tumultuous world, it remains difficult to name, and thus, creation continues.

The program, based on Yu Ching's writing and video creation, includes film screenings and a series of lectures. The film screenings feature nearly all of Yu Ching's video works, including her 2002 feature film "Good Mood," which has been digitally restored with support from Modern Film Printing Co., making it a world premiere. Each screening is followed by a discussion with speakers, while the series of lectures invites poets, media practitioners, and researchers from Taiwan and Hong Kong to discuss Yu Ching's writing and video creation. A meticulously produced special issue will be available in limited quantities during the event.
